Pine Ridge Woman Charged with Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury
November 30, 2006

Rapid City, South Dakota

United States Attorney Marty J. Jackley announced today that Jacklyn Short Bull of Pine Ridge appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Marshall P. Young in federal court and pled not guilty to the charges of assault resulting in serious bodily injury and assault with a dangerous weapon following an investigation conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Short Bull was indicted by a federal grand jury which met in October 2006. The maximum penalty upon conviction is ten years imprisonment and/or a $250,000 fine. Jackley said the charges relate to an incident which occurred on June 2, 2006, near Pine Ridge wherein Short Bull grabbed the steering wheel of the vehicle where she was a passenger and forcibly steered the car into a man walking along the road. As a result of being struck by the vehicle, the victim suffered serious bodily injury. This charge is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. Assistant United States Attorney Gregg S. Peterman is prosecuting the case. No date has been set for trial.
