Man pleads guilty to Assaulting Police Officer

United States Attorney Marty J. Jackley announced today that on August 30, 2006, Darrell Jones pleaded guilty in federal court to Assault Upon a Federal Officer. Jones of Pine Ridge appeared before U.S. District Judge Andrew W. Bogue and pleaded guilty to the original indictment which was returned following an investigation conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 20 years imprisonment and/or a $250,000 fine. Jackley said the charges relate to an incident on January 21, 2006, which occurred in downtown Pine Ridge Village when Jones rammed into a police car injuring the officer's head, neck and back. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Gregg S. Peterman. A presentence investigation was ordered and a sentencing date is set for November 20, 2006.
