Man Indicted for August Bank Robbery

Minneapolis - A federal grand jury has returned an indictment against Andrew Sonny Jones for the August, 2006, robbery of the Highland Bank in Minneapolis.

A criminal complaint filed in the case states that on August 9, 2006, Jones, age 45, entered the Highland Bank on Lasalle Avenue in Minneapolis. He approached a teller and asked for information regarding savings bonds. As the teller provided Jones with that material, he allegedly said he was robbing the bank and had a sawed-off shotgun. The teller then provided Jones with cash, and he fled the premises. Shortly thereafter, law enforcement officers arrested Jones in downtown Minneapolis. At the time of his arrest, Jones had a backpack and baseball cap that matched those the teller said the robber possessed. He also had a large roll of U.S. currency. If convicted, Jones faces a maximum potential penalty of twenty years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Any sentence will be determined by a judge.

This case is the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Richard A. Newberry.

An indictment is a determination by a grand jury that there is probable cause to believe that offenses have been committed by the defendant. The defendant, of course, is presumed innocent until he or she pleads guilty or is proven guilty at trial.
