Oglala Man Pleads Guilty to Voluntary Manslaughter

United States Attorney Marty J. Jackley announced today that on November 21, 2006, Jonathan Brave (19) pled guilty in federal court to voluntary manslaughter. Brave, of Oglala, appeared before U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier and pleaded guilty to the superseding information filed on November 21, 2006, after an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The maximum penalty upon conviction is ten years and/or a $250,000 fine. Jackley said the charges relate to an incident on August 9, 2006, near Oglala in which Brave killed Delane Stands by beating him with a metal bar. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Gregg S. Peterman. A presentence investigation was ordered and a sentencing date has been set for February 9, 2007.
