United States Attorney Marty J. Jackley announced today that on
August 30, 2007, Jason Dillon, age 31, of Batesland, was found
guilty by a jury in federal court of assault on federal officer
and not guilty on the charge of assault of a federal officer with
a dangerous weapon. Dillon was originally indicted by a federal
grand jury in May 2007 for assault on federal officer following
an investigation conducted by the FBI and the Bureau of Indian
Affairs. The maximum penalty upon conviction of assault on federal
officer is eight years imprisonment and/or a $250,000 fine. Jackley
said the charges relate to an incident that occurred on April 21,
2007, near Batesland, when Dillon assaulted a tribal officer of
the Oglala Sioux Department Public Safety with a weapon. On August
30, 2007, Dillon was convicted by a jury following a three-day
trial. This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney
Mara M. Kohn.
