United States Attorney Marty J. Jackley announced today that on
November 16, 2007, Leon Janis pled guilty in federal court to assault
resulting in serious bodily injury. Janis, 22, of Oglala, appeared
before U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier and pled guilty to
count II of the original indictment that was returned following
an investigation conducted by the BIA and the FBI. The maximum
penalty upon conviction is ten years imprisonment and/or a $250,000
fine. Jackley said the charge relates to an incident that occurred
on March 15, 2007, near Red Shirt when Janis assaulted another
person, causing serious injuries. The case was prosecuted by Assistant
United States Attorney Carolyn G. Olson. A presentence investigation
was ordered and a sentencing date will be set.
