Two men pleaded guilty yesterday in federal court in Minneapolis on unrelated bank robbery cases.
In the first case, Cody Lyle Green, 31, unknown address, entered his plea to one count of bank robbery May 29 before United States District Court Judge Ann Montgomery. Green was charged March 20 in connection with the Feb. 28 robbery of the First National Bank of the Lakes in Minneapolis.
According to Green’s plea agreement, he did by force, violence and intimidation, take approximately $1,000 from a teller at the bank, located at 3100 Hennepin Ave.
Green faces a potential maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. Judge Montgomery will determine Green’s sentence at a future date. This case is the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Minneapolis Police Department, and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael A. Dees.
In the second case, David Lee Barnes, 53, Bloomington, entered his plea of one count of armed bank robbery May 29 before U.S. District Court Judge Richard Kyle. Barnes was indicted on Feb. 20 in connection with holdups in Arden Hills, Minneapolis and Roseville.
According to his plea agreement, Barnes agrees that he committed three armed bank robberies. On Dec. 12, 2007, he took approximately $4,278 from the TCF Bank in Roseville; on Dec. 17, 2007, he took approximately $1,427 from the TCF Bank in Arden Hills; and on Jan. 10, 2008, he took approximately $150 from a TCF Bank in northeast Minneapolis.
According to a Federal Bureau of Investigation affidavit, Barnes entered the Roseville TCF Bank, located in a Cub Foods store at approximately 12:10 p.m. He approached a teller, pulled out a plastic bag, pointed a gun at the teller’s chest, and said “I’d like to make a withdrawal, put all the money you have in your drawer in the bag.” The robber added, “If you value your life and want to live, hurry up!”
On Dec. 17, 2007, the affidavit stated, Barnes entered the Arden Hills TCF Bank, also located in a Cub Foods store, at approximately 1 p.m. Again he allegedly pulled out a plastic bag and pointed a gun at a teller demanding cash.
On Jan. 10, 2008, Barnes entered the TCF Bank, located at 1602 New Brighton Blvd. in Minneapolis at approximately 12:15 p.m. He allegedly approached a teller carrying a bouquet of fresh flowers and a black canvas bag. He then allegedly pulled out a gun and demanded cash.
Bloomington Police had arrested Barnes on Jan. 11, 2008, in connection with a shoplifting and assault at the Wal-Mart store in Bloomington. At the time of his arrest, Barnes’s clothing matched those worn by the bank robbery suspect in both the Minneapolis and Roseville incidents, the affidavit stated. Barnes was later identified as the suspect from the Arden Hills robbery.
Barnes faces a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison. Judge Kyle will determine Barnes’s sentence at a future date. This case is the result of an investigation by the FBI, the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office and the police departments of Bloomington, Edina, Minneapolis and Roseville, and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney William J. Otteson.
