Rosebud
man sentenced for manslaughter

States Attorney Marty J. Jackley announced that a Rosebud man
charged with manslaughter was sentenced on February 8, 2008, by
United States District Court Chief Judge Karen E. Schreier. Melvin
J. Smashed Ice, Sr., age 39, was sentenced to ten years imprisonment,
five years supervised release, a $100 assessment, and $10,681
restitution to the victim's estate. Smashed Ice was indicted for
second degree murder by a federal grand jury on June 28, 2007.
The charge relates to the stabbing of a Mission man in June 2007.
On September 6, 2007, Smashed Ice pled guilty to a superceding
information charging voluntary manslaughter. This case was investigated
by the FBI and was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney
Randolph J. Seiler. Smashed Ice was immediately turned over to
the custody of the U.S. Marshal.
