Kyle Man Indicted for Bootlegging on Indian Reservation

United States Attorney Marty J. Jackley announced that a man has been indicted by a federal grand jury for bootlegging on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Craig Janis, age 44, of Kyle, was indicted by a federal grand jury on July 21, 2009, for dispensing intoxicants in Indian country. He appeared before US Magistrate Judge Veronica L. Duffy on July 27, 2009, and pled not guilty to the indictment. The maximum penalty upon conviction is one year imprisonment and a $100,00 fine. The charge is merely an accusation and Janis is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. The investigation is being conducted by the FBI. Assistant US Attorney Gregg S. Peterman is prosecuting the case. Janis was released on bond pending trial. A trial date has not yet been set.
