Oglala Woman Pleads Guilty to Making False Allegation of Abuse Against Family Member

U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that Vanna Chief Eagle, a/k/a Vanna Fast Wolf, age 19, of Oglala, appeared before Chief U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier on November 3, 2009, and pled guilty to an indictment that charged her with Making a False Statement. The maximum penalty upon conviction is five years' incarceration, a $250,000 fine, or both. Chief Eagle stated and represented in an investigative interview that she and her sister were sexually abused and assaulted by an uncle, when in fact, she knew that to be false. The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeremy R. Jehangiri. A presentence investigation was ordered, and a sentencing date was set for February 1, 2010. The defendant was released pending sentencing.
