Ralph S. Boelter, Special Agent in Charge of the Minneapolis FBI office, today, announced the arrest of David Ernest Schaer, age 36, of Bayport, Minnesota.  On Tuesday, August 28, 2007, at approximately 3:30 pm, officers from the Minnesota State Patrol, Cloquet Police Department, Carlton County Sheriff’s Office, and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources arrested Schaer after a traffic stop was conducted on I-35 South near the Esko, Minnesota exit.  The arrest was without incident.

On August 29, 2007, a federal criminal complaint was filed in United States District Court, District of Minnesota, Duluth, Minnesota, charging David Ernest Schaer with bank robbery for the alleged August 28, 2007, robbery of the Western National Bank, located at 201 Central Avenue North, Duluth, Minnesota.

The complaint alleges that in addition to the robbery of the Western National Bank, the defendant is also believed to be responsible for the August 21, 2007, robbery of the City County Credit Union, 3651 Central Avenue NE, Minneapolis, Minnesota.  Federal charges have not been filed with respect to  the alleged robbery of the City County Credit Union.

Schaer made his Initial Appearance in federal court today and was ordered detained pending further court proceedings.

This investigation was a joint effort by the Duluth Police Department and the FBI The United States Attorney’s Office, District of Minnesota is prosecuting this case.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           

 

 

The charges in a federal criminal complaint are merely an accusation and defendants are presumed innocent until they are proven guilty.
