Ralph S. Boelter, Special Agent in Charge of the Minneapolis FBI office, today, announced the federal arrest of Steven Walter Smialek, age 50, of Fridley, Minnesota. Officers from the Fridley Police Department and FBI agents arrested Smialek yesterday, at approximately 12:00 p.m., at a business located in the 5200 block of Central Avenue NE, Coon Rapids, Minnesota. Subsequent to the robbery, photographs of the robber were aired in the local media and law enforcement received numerous tips by concerned citizens stating that the robber appeared to be the defendant.
Today, April 29, 2008, a federal criminal complaint was filed in United States District Court, District of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minnesota, charging Steven Walter Smialek with bank robbery for the alleged April 25, 2008, robbery of the TCF Bank, located at 5205 Central Avenue NE, Fridley, Minnesota.
Today, April 29, 2008, Smialek made his Initial Appearance in United States District Court and was ordered detained pending further court proceedings.
This investigation is a joint effort by the Fridley Police Department and the FBI. The United States Attorney’s Office, District of Minnesota is prosecuting this case.
The charges in a federal criminal complaint are merely an accusation and defendants are presumed innocent until they are proven guilty .
