Ralph S. Boelter, Special Agent in Charge of the Minneapolis FBI office, today, announced the federal arrest of David Lee Barnes, age 52, of Bloomington, Minnesota. Barnes was taken into federal custody today for allegedly robbing three metro area banks. Barnes was already in local custody after being arrested on January 11, 2008, by the Bloomington Police Department. Barnes was arrested by the Bloomington Police for allegedly stabbing two Wal-Mart security guards in Bloomington, Minnesota.

On January 31, 2008, a federal criminal complaint was filed in United States District Court, District of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minnesota, charging David Lee Barnes with three counts of bank robbery for the alleged January 10, 2008, robbery of the TCF Bank, located at 1602 New Brighton Boulevard, Minneapolis, Minnesota; the alleged December 17, 2007, robbery of the TCF Bank-Cub Foods located at 3717 North Lexington Avenue, Arden hills, Minnesota; and the alleged December 12, 2007, robbery of the TCF Bank-Cub Foods, located at 2100 North Snelling Avenue, Roseville, Minnesota.

David Barnes made his Initial Appearance in United States District Court this morning and was ordered detained pending further court proceedings.

This investigation was a joint effort by the Bloomington Police Department, Roseville Police Department, Minneapolis Police Department, Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI. The United States Attorney’s Office, District of Minnesota is prosecuting this case.

The charges in a federal criminal complaint are merely an accusation and defendants are presumed innocent until they are proven guilty .
